Toto Costruzioni Generali wins 130 million contract for earthquake-resistant reconstruction of five viaducts on A25 freeway
The work marks the start of the seismic safety plan on the A25 highway in the section through Marsica and the Peligna Valley
Toto Costruzioni Generali has been awarded a contract for the design and execution of safety and seismic retrofitting works for five viaducts on the A25 freeway, in the section that crosses the Peligna Valley and Marsica, between the Avezzano and Bussi/Popoli exits for a total of 2.9 kilometers. The lot, worth about 130 million euros, is one of three put out to tender by the Extraordinary Commissioner for the seismic safety of the A24-A25
The work, carried out on a section of freeway in operation, will proceed according to a timetable designed to minimize any interference with the freeway road system, ensuring the continuity of construction sites on one carriageway at a time and concentrating the most impactful operations at night.
Toto Costruzioni Generali, which has already carried out major works of this type on Abruzzo’s highways, demolishing and seismically retrofitting some viaducts in the section closest to the L’Aquila crater, between the Tornimparte and L’Aquila Ovest exits, aims to apply the same cutting-edge technological solutions, capable of minimizing the visual impact of the works on the magnificent landscape crossed and absorbing seismic stresses, ensuring the new works a useful life of at least 100 years.
With these assignments, the executive phase of the massive plan to make the highways connecting Abruzzo’s capitals to Rome seismically safe kicks off, in accordance with the provisions of Parliament in 2012 after the L’Aquila earthquake. Interventions involving the reconstruction of works designed more than fifty years ago, lacking devices capable of ensuring proper static and elastic behavior of the structures in the event of new earthquakes.
