The rehabilitation of the Ritiro Viaduct, a fundamental connection between the town centre and the major motorway junctions in Messina, has entered the most complex and spectacular phase. Now that the rehinforcement of the piles foundations has been completed, the disassembly of the deck is in full swing.
Toto’s workers and engineers have entirely removed the safety barriers from both carriageways and cut the deck slabs and the concrete kerbs, using a diamond wheel cutter. At this stage, a launching girder allows to disassemble, lift and carry each beam to the demolition area.
Today, the decks on five spans of the viaduct, the farthest from the residential area, have been completely disassembled. Over the next few months, the evacuation of the buildings near the viaduct wil allow to complete the disassembly on the other spans.
