The works for the doubling of the Palermo-Messina railway line, in the section between Cefalù and Castelbuono, are coming to life: the intervention, in which Toto Costruzioni participates for 74.11%, will contribute to the rebirth of the splendid town of Cefalù, which, thanks to a more efficient connection with the capital and the airport “Falcone-Borsellino”, will make its artistic and natural beauties more accessible to tourists.
A particularly articulated project, the one in progress in Sicily, which uses the most advanced technologies to redesign the face of the railway line that connects some of the most beautiful places on the northern coast of the island. On the whole, work is carried out on a section of about 12.3 km, on which a double track variant will be built, with the excavation of 3 tunnels (Cefalù, Sant’ Ambrogio and Malpertugio).
A single dual mode TBM will be used for the construction of the Cefalù tunnel (i. e. with the possibility of digging both in open mode and EPB mode), while an open type TBM will be used for the excavation of the S. Ambrogio tunnel. The works include the underground stop of Cefalù, along the tunnel bearing the same name, for which a narrow drainage tunnel is planned using micro-tunnelling technology.
There are also numerous outdoor works, including the new Castelbuono station and a new electrical substation in the Carbone area. At the end of the works, the level crossing along the SS 113 “Northern Sicula” at the gates of the town centre for those coming from Palermo, will be eliminated. In addition, the existing track on the surface of the railway line, which breaks the urban fabric of Cefalù and has so far conditioned its urban development, will disappear.
